Chess Society

We are the QUB chess club which organises both competitive and non-competitive chess games. Our non-competitive games take place in The Lounge in the SU Elmwood building from 6:00pm-8:00pm every Monday. These club-nights act as informal meetups in which people can come along, play chess with whomever they wish, generally other random members, for as long as they wish to play. Members may drop in and out during the two hours whenever they please. All levels, from beginner to expert, are catered for and we can always find an opponent to match the member’s strength or teach new members the rules.

Our competitive games primarily take the form of matches between other clubs in and around Belfast in the Ulster Chess League. In these games members can represent Queens Chess Club against other clubs in teams of 5. These games take place on a weekly basis, with our home games being held on Tuesday nights and our away games being subject to the weeknight stipulated by our opponents. Members can join one of our 3 teams in accordance with their strength. To represent QUB in this league, members will additionally need to be paid members of the Ulster Chess Union. If one wants to become a more involved chess player joining the UCU is highly recommended as it comes with many benefits such as acquiring a rating from the UCU and being able to take part in other competitions organised by the UCU such as weekend tournaments and blitz chess tournaments. Members are able join the UCU through the club.

In addition to our weekly club-nights and weekly competitive games against other clubs, we hold tournaments throughout the year, both long form chess and blitz chess, and we go on a yearly trip to the Bunratty International Chess Tournament, a weekend tournament in Limerick which features many internationally recognised chess masters.

We would be delighted to have any new members, whether casual or competitive, so please come by and see us during one of our club nights, or get in touch with us via our facebook page or email address (Chess-Club@qub.ac.uk) for any further information.
