What it's all about

During October 2018, we are proud to be launching and celebrating our first Black History Month!

Black History Month is celebrated to platform the rich heritage and diverse backgrounds of the Black Community throughout the UK.

As we grow into a rapidly diversifying community in Northern Ireland, it's imperative that we are engaging with our Afro-Caribbean communities on campus and beyond, and building networks within the community.

Throughout October we have a range of events planned to celebrate the work of our Black students and staff on campus...

Fri 5 - Black History Month Launch
South Dining Hall, QUB, 6-8pm
To kick-start Black History month, we have lined up a fantastic array of speakers and performers to give you a taster of the events we have lined up for the month ahead. It will be an evening of good food, fun and laughter! Register here.

Tues 9 - Black HERstory: Panel Discussion
Senate Room, QUB, 5.30-7pm
Join us for a discussion with a panel that will bring you insights on and celebrate the unique contribution of Black women to various social justice movements such as #metoo, all things related to feminism and academia, alongside highlighting the lived experiences of Black women in predominantly white spaces. Come along for an evening of conversations that encompass and platform Black Women and their contributions to society, past and present! Light refreshments will be provided. Register here.

Thurs 11 - Dear White QUB: Art Exhibition & Performance Night
The Lounge, Students' Union - Elmwood, 5.30-8pm. £5 at the door
Food and Art are the truest and rawest form of expression. We bring you an evening of performances and an exhibition bringing together work from our students and staff, as well as the wider Afro-Caribbean community in NI. It will be an evening of art and getting to know the work of Black artists in our community, and enjoying an evening of music, spoken word, as well as visual art! We've also lined up a fantastic Afro-Caribbean meal for you to enjoy and celebrate this Black History Month with us! Register here.

Wed 17 - Afro-Carribean Society Night
The Speakeasy, Students' Union - Lisburn Road, 10.30pm-onwards. £3 for ACS members and £5 for non-members at the door.
Come on down to our Afro-Caribbean Society club night and get jiggy with it! With music by DJ DWEST, you can expect non-stop hits all night featuring afrobeats, RnB & Hip-Hop!

Thurs 25 - Dear White QUB: Film Screening & Panel Discussion
The Lounge, Students' Union - Elmwood, 6pm-onwards
It's our favourite night - Movie Night! Come join us as we celebrate Black filmmakers, their unique perspectives and stellar work. The movie screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the representation of Black people in the film industry, as well as African filmmaking and its social contexts. Light refreshments will be provided. Register here.

Tues 30 - Why Is My Curriculum White?
Senate Room, QUB, 5.30pm-onwards
To end Black History Month at QUBSU, we thought, it's time to ask the big question. 'Why is my curriculum white?'- a question so many of us often wonder about in our classrooms as we learn or teach. So much of the education system today in universities has been largely shaped by eurocentric and white thinkers and dismisses the perspectives of work by non-white scholars. Join us for an evening of discussion with Ilyas Nagdee, NUS Black Students' Officer, on decolonising the curriculum, and how we can work to campaign for a better, more inclusive curriculum for all. Light refreshments will be provided. Register here.

We hope to see you at our events!
