Hi, I'm Jay.
I don't want to tell you about me, I want to tell you what I want to do for you! Here are just some of the things I will be introducing or helping organise so you can get the most out of being at Queens!!!
- Events EVERY Weekend. I will be organising an event for you guys every weekend. This will be anything from Laser Quest to picnics (which will likely be indoor because of the weather), showings of films at Queen's Cinema (QFT) to trips away to Cork or Dublin! The other part of this will be getting all the events that do already happen on the weekends advertised in one central place! A lot goes on at the weekend, you just don't hear about it.
- Improving Town & Gown Relations! Students get a bad rep - there's no two ways about it. One of my focuses will be on improving the relations between the residents who have lived here most of their lives and student residents. This is not something that can be achieved overnight, but with constant work and some real long term aims (5 - 10 years) we can hope to improve the quality of living for townies and gownies! I'm gonna need your buy in on this one though! There's lots going on, if you could even give an hour or two every week or even once a month, it'd be fantastic!
There are those who would try and remove students from local communities and change the law so that we must live in purpose-built accommodation. As a Students' Union we must protect the rights of students to live wherever they chose, however, we must make sure that students are responsible where they live.I attend all relevant residents groups to ensure students rights are protected.
- RAG Events: Abseil, Jailbreak, maybe firewalking or Zorbing, definitely lots of fancy dress raids, the list goes on. RAG is all about students raising money for local charities, in fun, (and sometimes wacky) ways. Email: su.vpcommunity@qub.ac.uk or su.rag@qub.ac.uk to find out our up and coming events, how you can get involved, or just learn a bit more about us!
If you want to get in touch about anything - maybe you want to get involved - maybe you want to host your own events, or maybe you just want more info - don't hesitate to email me: su.vpcommunity@qub.ac.uk or pop into the office on the 2nd floor of the SU. I'm always here to help! (Unless I'm in a meeting - and then I will be here to help very soon!)
